Lehtileikkeleet

  46. Frank Says:

    Hi!

What you see in that picture is ‘Bagger 288′ (the world’s biggest bucket-wheel excavator) crossing the Federal highway 55, en route to Garzweiler in Germany.

The picture was taken February/March 2001.

Bagger 288 was build by Krupp and is owned by RWE Germany (it’s part of a fleet of 21). They use it for open cask lignite mining. The German word ‘Bagger’ means excavator or digger, btw.

It’s about 96 meters high and 240 meters long, has a weight of 13500 tons, it’s top speed is 10 meters a minute, and it is operated by just 5 people.

    Many more pictures here:

  47. Frank Says:

Sorry, didn’t eat my link. Do this: Google for “Bagger 288″ and click on the link “RWE Power AG – Baggertransport 2001″ that should come up. Website’s mostly in German, I’m afraid, but lots of really impressive pics.

whow! I get 50 comments in some strange teutonic language. Am I slashdotted or wtf? I guess I’m not slashdotted, coz then I propably wouldn’t be here saying this. Ok, anyway some explanations…

I got the picture from my friend via e-mail. I don’t know what the machine is but I’m pretty sure it is photoshopped. I think it is big enough to cut Turku from Suomi. It is bit hard to explain foreingers why people from Helsinki don’t like Turku too much. One thing is the annoying dialect they speak. There is also saying that Turku is Finlands ass.

And last the headline lehtileikkeleet doesn’t have much to do with the machine. It is somekind of.. umh language trick. The spelling lehtileikkeet means cutting from the paper. Lehtileikkeleet is not a real word. It trasnalates something like thin sausage cuttings. Some finnish pop star from sixties, Irwin Goodman, used it in telly and I thought it was funny. Propably most of the finns can’t tell the difference. Ok, have fun and don’t spam my site with emoticons

Saw this on a special on the Discovery Channel “Mega Machines” or something. No it’s not photoshopped, and it digs mines. The entire upper section rotates 360 degrees to dig a circular pit. And yes, it’s phucking huge. I believe they had two of them that needed to travel a rediculous distance from one site to another, and they needed to build special “roads” for them to travel on, since they weigh like a million tons. Very cool stuff. Wouldn’t want to get run over by it, kinda like getting hit by a glacier.

  60. Anonymous Says:

Yep, that’s what it is. I saw that Discovery Channel special as well.
It’s a huge (as in “no, that pic ain’t photoshopped”) mining machine used for excavating coal and other minerals.

I forget how many tons of rock they said it could chew up in 1 hour, but I vaguely recall something about having to leave the machine turned on 24/7 once it reaches its destination since it takes really long to start it up again.

Maybe google “giant wheel excavator” for more info?

The Heaviest Element Yet, Just Discovered:

Research has led to the discovery of the heaviest
element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (Gv), has
one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called
morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second to take from four days to four years to complete.
Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years; It
does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons
exchange places. In fact, Governmentium’s mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, formingu isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists
to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass.
When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes
Administratium, an element that radiates just as much energy as
Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.
